Who's fault is it when small market teams fail ? The team or the fans?
It almost seems like a cycle, if a team does not get enough money from their fans through tickets, tv revenues, etc. a team can't put out a competitive team. When that happens fans stop going to games and if fans stop going to games...the cycle continues. I don't think a salary cap would help but instead hurt baseball because it will be boring to watch what let's say a $90 million salary cap can buy nowadays. I think star players deserve a chance to make $20 million for a years work, at least they work hard for it. I'm sure they work harder than the Will Smith's or George Clooney's of the world. What do you think?
I think it falls on the shoulders of the team, not the fans. Here's why:
I am a fan of the Royals. I have been for the last 20 years or so. For the last 10 years or so, I would only go to about 2 -3 games per year max. This year, the Royals spent a bit more money (albeit on the wrong players), and I was excited about the pre-season hype, so I bought a 10 game pack ticket plan. Thus, they got more money from my pocket this year... a LOT more.
When the Royals can field a competitive team, people will show up to watch. Even at the end of the year, when the Royals were in the tank, the attendance would double each time Greinke started. I think that in smaller market cities, people are hungry for a winner, and will turn out to support their team. But in order to draw more fans, you have to put something on the field for your fans to get excited about. You have to spend money to make money. When the small market teams actually learn this, and go over budget on their team a little bit, they'll start seeing the fans get more excited and turn out for the games. That's when your merchandise sales go up, as well as the revenue from the TV sponsors.
You can't blame the fans for not wanting to spend money to watch a lousy team. You have to blame the owners for not fielding a winning team.

And to Kevin. How much does each individual team get from the revenue sharing. Let's say that the Yankees have to pay $50 million this year towards revenue sharing. And that's divided among the bottom 10 teams in regards to payroll. That means that the Royals (for instance), only get $5 million dollars. How is 5 million dollars going to help the Royals in signing a player like Teixeira, or Sabathia? Or Matt Holliday, or Jason Bay, or Roy Halladay...? It doesn't help them at all. Sure they can put that 5 million into their team, but how far does that really get them when the Yankee$ will just out bid them anyway?
